Jacked Box Tunnelling

THIS IS A NON-DISRUPTIVE TECHNIQUE FOR UNDERGROUND INSTALLATION OF ON-SITE BUILT CONCRETE BOX STRUCTURES.

It is used to cross major highways or railways that cannot be blocked by open-cut excavations and subsequent construction works. Even in the case of large structures this technique avoids disruption of adjacent infrastructures.
Only in few instances (railway and road crossings) does jacking require partial traffic restrictions and/or speed limit reductions; however, such measures cause minimal inconvenience for the reduced road occupancy and the short working time.

Protection works are needed for railway crossings, whereas they depend on the site-specific conditions in the case of highway crossings, when they have to be constructed together with reinforcement of the road surface. This will prevent the ground surface from collapsing and causing damages to overlying and/or adjacent infrastructures, thereby guaranteeing adequate safety factors throughout operations.
