Well Boring

THE AIM OF WELL BORING IS TO REACH ONE OR MORE WATER TABLES AND TO MEET THE WATER SUPPLY NEEDS OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

Artesian wells can be 170 / 200 m in depth and be used for agricultural (irrigation) and/or industrial purposes.

Before the actual boring operations begin, a (very small) yard has to be set up, in which all boring machinery (engine, boring rod and cutting head) will be sited.

Rotary drills are used to bore wells up to 50 m in depth and percussion drills are required for deeper wells.

The type of construction depends on the soil consistency and the depth and diameter of the well.

After boring, the well is usually lined with liner (steel or PVC) pipes to prevent soil displacements and settlements inside the well.

After installation, the space between soil and liner pipes is filled with draining material (selected gravel of the proper size) to ensure good filtering.
